"It's the landscape, stupid"

Lecture | Thursday, 15 January 2015, 7 p.m.

Gardens are an obsession for the graphic and object artist and landscape designer Mario Terzic. At the beginning of the 1990s, he was appointed professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he established the Department of Landscape Design in 2000 with a combined focus on the history of gardens, gardening, botany and landscape planning. As a visiting professor in Peking, Terzic is currently developing a series of projects under the heading “It’s the landscape, stupid”, which reflect the spirit with which he has addressed the challenges facing landscape design during the last twenty years. The projects can be seen as artistic investigations into core aspects of landscape in social and economic terms. His artistic approach can be irritating and the response of architects, curators and local politicians is not always positive, but it has helped Terzic achieve recognition as one of the pioneers of a new quality of landscape. In his lecture, Mario Terzic will present some of the projects in the “It’s the landscape, stupid” series such as the “Spirit Garden” proposed for Alpbach as the venue for the European Forum, suggestions for cultivation of the wasteland between the high-rise buildings of Vienna’s Donau City and the transformation of modern ruins on Zakynthos.
